Throughout this marking period, students will use an inquiry approach to gather ideas, draft, revise, edit, produce and present narrative, informative, and opinion texts.  Assignments will include the writing process and the 6 + 1 Traits of Writing instruction. Speaking and listening are embedded throughout the writing process: to rehearse ideas, conference, and present published work.  Students will also apply the inquiry process and compose an opinion piece during the Careers: Present and Future Inquiry.  Content explored throughout the marking period in Social Studies, Science, and Art will build conceptual understanding for this inquiry project.

In the beginning few weeks of this quarter, students will explore the relationship between reading and writing. Students will draw evidence from reading multiple informational texts on a topic before writing an informational poem. They will develop their informational poem with concrete details, information, and examples. Students will draw evidence from informational texts used in Reading, Art, content areas, or background information and select a topic for an informational poem.  Later, students will determine a text structure to organize their poem. Although students may not publish their informational writing, they will engage in the writing process by revising for word choice and editing for conventions.

In the later weeks, students will use the inquiry process to investigate: Which factors will have the strongest impact on determining the occupations that will exist in the future?; In what ways does the ability to apply thinking and academic success skills determine the success of workers in the future? Students will formulate detailed questions to begin their inquiry.  Students will gather facts about a career and seek answers to their detailed questions.  After gathering information, students will analyze their research to determine whether they believe the job will or will not exist in the future.  As a result, they will draft a thesis statement and begin to organize reasons to support their thesis.

Throughout these weeks, students will engage in peer conferences to examine their introduction and the body paragraphs and if their opinion is supported by relevant and logically ordered facts and details.  Students will create a multimedia product and plan a presentation for which they plan how to logically share the ideas.
